Nourishing the nation this summer with Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief

The London Community Foundation are delighted to announce that 41 holiday activity and food projects across London have been supported this summer by the Sainsbury's Nourish the Nation programme, in partnership with Comic Relief.

Nourish the Nation aims to tackle food poverty by helping people access the balanced, nutritional, and sustainable food they need, right now and in the future. With the school summer holidays just around the corner, there will be many families across the city worrying about feeding their children over the next six weeks. This is especially true for those families who aren’t able to access existing holiday scheme provision or who receive free school meals during school term times but receive less help during school holidays.

The Department for Education currently provides support to children (reception to year 11) who receive benefits-related free school meals through their Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme. The programme is delivered through local councils to children who receive free school meals (FSM) if their parents receive one of the qualifying benefits. However, Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief have seen evidence that some children who need support are missing out, and the scheme does not cover the whole summer – often 4 weeks of a 6-week holiday. Nourish the Nation aims to improve and increase access for those children, filling the gaps in the current system across London’s communities.

The 41 projects funded by Sainsbury’s Nourish the Nation will provide school children (up to Year 11) with improved access to summer holiday activity and food schemes. The organisations either already provide food and holiday activities and plan to increase their access and reach through this funding, or they currently do not provide such services but, due to their community links, are well-placed to deliver a summer food and activity scheme.

We are delighted to have received funding from The London Community Foundation to offer additional staff/facilitators, fun-filled activities and spaces for our Autistic and SEND children as well as siblings too.

Comic Relief also identified a specific gap in supporting children and young people with disabilities with food and activities during the summer and so we’re delighted to be able to support both specialist organisations that support children and young people with disabilities and generalist organisations that can increase their capacity to support children and young people with disabilities as a result of this funding.
