Standing in solidarity with our community

By Harbi Jama

We are shocked and appalled by the far-right riots happening across the country targeting Muslims, migrants, refugees, and people of colour. Racism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, and xenophobia have no place in our society.

We are deeply concerned for the physical safety of the communities being targeted as well as their mental health and wellbeing. No one should feel worried about their safety or that of their family or community because of their race or religion.

As the community foundation for London, we stand in solidarity with all communities being targeted. As an organisation, we strive to create a fairer society in London, one where everyone has equitable access to opportunity, where diversity is celebrated, and where inclusion means everyone feels they belong, feels safe, and feels valued.

The power of coming together

The events that took place yesterday (Wednesday, 7th August) across London and the UK, showing masses of people standing up to hate, Islamophobia, and racism, give us hope for a better future for all of us.

Since 2010, we have responded to many challenging crises and emergencies, from the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, COVID-19 in 2020, the London Refugee Response to welcome Afghan refugees in 2021, and the cost-of-living crisis appeal in 2022.

We will work hard to reach out to our community partners to show solidarity with the communities impacted by this violence and support the vital organisations that work tirelessly on the frontline.

We will also connect with our networks, such as the UK Community Foundation and London Funders to see how we can contribute to delivering long-term support and change.

We believe in the generosity and solidarity of Londoners, its public sector, businesses, and individuals who support people in their local community, get involved, and make a difference to people’s lives. We know that, like many other times, if we call for support, we can rely on you to help create that change.

Thank you for standing in solidarity with all communities in London and across our four nations.
